A little bit about the Girl from 7 Mile

Kenya T. Coviak is a multi-faceted writer, journalist, magical teacher, folkloric herbalist, family service worker, community advocate, and special event specialist based in the Detroit Metropolitan area. She is the creator behind the Detroit Conjure and Folk Magic Festival, bringing together diverse spiritual communities through educational programming and cultural celebration.

* Teaching & Presentations

Since 2006, Kenya has been an active presenter at public events, festivals, and workshops throughout the region. As an African American Folk Magician and Hoodoo practitioner from Detroit, Michigan, her magical training includes oral traditional teachings, magical studies in American modern neo-pagan witchcraft, and magical practice.

Kenya has shared her expertise at numerous conferences and festivals, including ConVocation, Michigan Pagan Fest, Pagan Pride Day Detroit, Bluewater Pagan Conference, and Witchfest USA in New York City. She also facilitates an herbal seminar series, sharing her knowledge as a folkloric herbalist.

Kenya is the host and creator of “My Magical Cottagecore Life,” a podcast exploring magic, festivals, teachings, Detroit history, plants, nature, and kindness”. She also hosted “Explorations in Curious Herbalism w/ Kenya T Coviak” on Magickal Witchy World TV. Kenya formerly served as photo journalist, interviewer, and Content Editor for PBN News Network, where she contributed thoughtful perspectives on community, spirituality, and cultural practice.

* Community Service & Leadership

Dedicated to community service, Kenya created the Good Witch Befana Program under the GLWC, a combination food pantry and toys for children program. Currently, she runs Toys for Yule and the Little Witches Ball in SE Michigan, continuing her commitment to supporting families and children in her community.

Kenya was a Coordinator of Detroit Pagan Pride Project, and later an independent Detroit Pagan Pride based in Michigan. She served on the board of Detroit Pagan Pride Inc. She is a former administrator of the Michigan Pagan Scholarship and former Liaison for the Michigan Witches Ball and Bazaar.

As a passionate advocate for families, Kenya created the Fire on the Water Doula Festival and served as an advocate for the Mother to Mother Breastfeeding program, Women’s Rights advocate, and Black Mother’s rights advocate. She also ran Mama Turtle’s Homeschool Resource Program, supporting homeschooling families in their educational journeys.

Kenya holds a degree in Liberal Arts from Highland Park Community College, where she was a Scholar in the W.E.B. Du Bois Honors Program. She attended Spring Arbor University for Family Life Education curriculum and completed her GONA facilitator training through American Indian Health and Family Services in Detroit.

Kenya is a published author and contributing writer whose work appears in multiple anthologies and publications, including “The Good Witch’s Guide: A Modern-Day Wiccapedia” by Shawn Robbins and Charity Bedell, “The Heart of the Elder: Good Elders and Their Influence” by Lillith ThreeFeathers and Joy Marie Wedmedyk, and “Llewellyn’s Complete Book of North American Folk Magic: A Landscape of Magic, Mystery, and Tradition” by Cory Thomas Hutcheson.

She has also authored cookbooks celebrating simple, seasonal living, including “My Magical Cottagecore Life: The Quick Recipe Book” and “Scythe and Seed: An Autumnal Cookbook.” Kenya is currently published by Spiral Moon Circle Publishing and My Magical Cottagecore Life Publishing.

Kenya is the creator of the Minaudière de Sorcière spell deck.
